The Shepherd

“I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd sacrifices his life for the sheep.” John 10:11

When Jesus called Himself the Good Shepherd, His listeners wouldn't have pictured a peaceful scene with fluffy white sheep grazing on a green hillside.

Shepherding was hard, dirty, unglamorous work. Shepherds spent their days outside in the heat and their nights exposed to the cold. They dealt with stubborn sheep, predators, thieves, injuries, blood, mud. It wasn't a position of prestige. Shepherding was often left to those with little status.

It was the kind of job no one was fighting to get.

And Jesus chose that picture for Himself.

The King of kings could have emphasized His authority, power, or rightful place on the throne. Instead, He said, “I am the good shepherd.”

The One who deserved the highest place willingly took the low one.

The Shepherd left the throne.

But Jesus didn't stop with the title. He told us exactly what makes the Good Shepherd good: He lays down His life for His sheep.

Sin had created a distance from God we could never cross on our own. The Gospel isn't the story of humanity figuring out how to climb high enough, work hard enough, or become holy enough to reach God.

It's the story of God coming down to us.

We couldn't climb our way to Him, so Jesus came to us.

The Shepherd entered the pasture.

He left the glory of Heaven and stepped into our mess. He walked among sinners, touched the unclean, welcomed the rejected, and washed dirty feet.

Then He carried every one of our sins right up Calvary Hill and bore them on that cross.

Not His sin. Ours.

The Shepherd became the Lamb.

Jesus didn't simply point you toward salvation. He became your salvation. The Shepherd came looking for His wandering sheep, and when rescuing you required His life, He willingly laid it down.

From the manger to the cross, Jesus kept choosing the low place. He chose the job no one wanted, took the punishment you deserved, and did the work no one else could do.

He left Heaven to come for you. He humbled Himself to serve you. He gave His life to save you.

Jesus chose the lowest place so that one day, you could join Him in the highest place.

The Shepherd came down to bring His sheep home.

You are loved!
