Stand Out
Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Romans 12:2
Most of us spend a good portion of our lives trying to fit in.
As kids, we wanted the right clothes, the right friends, and the right lunchbox. As teenagers, we worried about saying the wrong thing, wearing the wrong thing, or somehow standing out for all the wrong reasons.
And honestly, not much changes when we become adults.
We still want approval.
We still worry about what people think.
We still feel the pressure to go along with the crowd.
The crowd may look different now, but the pressure is the same.
Everyone's chasing success, popularity, busyness, and the appearance that life is perfectly put together. Everyone's outraged about something. Everyone's comparing, criticizing, complaining, and carefully crafting images that look better than reality.
And little by little, without even realizing it, we can begin fitting into a world we were never meant to resemble.
Paul warned believers, "Do not conform to the pattern of this world."
Why?
Because followers of Jesus were never called to blend in.
We were called to shine.
Standing out doesn't necessarily mean being loud or obnoxious. It doesn't mean arguing with everyone on social media or carrying around a giant Bible under your arm.
Sometimes standing out looks surprisingly ordinary.
It looks like refusing to participate in gossip when everyone else is tearing someone down.
It looks like extending kindness when the world rewards outrage.
It looks like choosing forgiveness instead of bitterness.
It looks like praying for someone instead of simply saying, "I'm thinking about you."
It looks like admitting your struggles instead of pretending you have everything together.
It looks like loving difficult people, showing gentleness, and living with hope in a world that seems to have lost its mind.
It looks like asking, "What honors Jesus?" instead of, "What will people think?"
Friend, fitting in has never changed the world.
But ordinary believers who were willing to stand out have.
The early Christians stood out.
Daniel stood out.
Esther stood out.
And Jesus certainly stood out.
He never blended in with the culture around Him. He loved differently. Spoke differently. Lived differently. And because He did, He changed everything.
Maybe the greatest witness we have isn't trying harder to look like everyone else.
Maybe it's looking enough like Jesus that people notice the difference.
After all, lights were never created to blend into the darkness.
They were created to shine.
You are loved!
