One Spark

In the same way, the tongue is a small thing that makes grand speeches. But a tiny spark can set a great forest on fire. James 3:5 NLT

If you've watched the news lately, or you live in the Pacific Northwest, you've seen the heartbreaking images coming from the western half of our country. Massive wildfires are sweeping across forests and cities. Thick smoke has turned the sky gray, families are evacuating their homes, and many have lost theirs where neighborhoods have become ash.

Firefighters are working around the clock to protect lives and communities.

After such a dry year, the forests have become tinder. Months of drought, scorching temperatures, and relentless winds have created the perfect conditions for a wildfire.

Despite all that dry fuel waiting to burn, it still takes just one thing to start it.

One spark.

James uses that same image to describe something we often underestimate—our words.

One sarcastic remark.

One piece of gossip.

One lie to make ourselves look a little better.

One angry outburst.

Even one careless comment typed in frustration and sent before we stop to pray.

Like a spark carried by the wind, our words can spread farther than we ever imagined. Relationships can be damaged. Trust can be broken. Reputations can be destroyed. Once spoken, words cannot be called back any more than a wildfire can return to the match that started it.

That's why James warns us to take our words seriously.

Thankfully, we don't have to tame our tongues through sheer willpower. The same Holy Spirit who transforms our hearts also transforms our speech.

Before sharp words ever leave our mouths, He convicts us. He reminds us to pause, to pray, and to choose words that reflect the heart of Christ instead of the impulses of our flesh.

Every conversation gives us the opportunity to build someone up—or burn them down.

Before you speak...

Pause.

Invite Jesus into the conversation before you ever say a word.

Because one spark is all it takes.

Use yours to bring warmth, not wildfire.

You are loved!
