No Good Thing Withheld

For the Lord God is our sun and our shield. He gives us grace and glory. The Lord will withhold no good thing from those who do what is right. Psalm 84:11

The psalmist gives us four gifts in this single verse—four glimpses into the heart of God. Sun. Shield. Grace. Glory.

Sun: The source of life, warmth, and light. Nothing grows without it. And just as the sun rises each morning to chase away the darkness, God’s presence brings light to even the most shadowed corners of our lives. He is not distant or cold. He shines—constant, faithful, steady—nurturing hope in dry seasons and illuminating our path when we can’t see the way forward.

Shield: Life can hit hard. Sometimes we face battles that drain our strength and threaten our peace. But God is not only our light—He’s our defender. Our shield. The One who stands between us and the enemy, who absorbs what we cannot bear, who surrounds us in steadfast love when our hearts are vulnerable and raw.

Grace: This is the gift we don’t deserve and can never earn. Grace shows up in the middle of pain with supernatural strength. It whispers peace in the chaos and offers rest when we're worn out from the fight. It is the oxygen of the soul when we feel like we’re drowning—gentle, sufficient, always present.

Glory: God doesn’t waste anything. Not even suffering. Glory is the promise that what we endure today will one day be redeemed. That the broken pieces of our stories will shine with eternal beauty. We may not see it yet, but He is already weaving something holy from what feels hopeless. Glory is the “why” behind the waiting, the purpose behind the pain.

And then comes the part that stirs both comfort and wrestling: “The Lord will withhold no good thing.”

His definition of good, not our own. We long for ease, resolution, healing. He longs for our hearts. What He gives is always for our good—our ultimate good, the kind that draws us nearer, makes us more like Christ, and prepares us for a forever that will make this momentary struggle worth it.

So hold on.

To the Light that never burns out. To the Shield that never breaks. To the Grace that never runs dry. To the Glory that never fades. To your God who never withholds what is truly good.

You are loved!
