Lift Your Head
But You, O LORD, are a shield around me, my glory, the One who lifts my head. Psalm 3:3
Shame, grief, discouragement, failure, and fear all have something in common:
They lower our heads. They slump our shoulders. They burden us with weight we were never meant to carry alone.
David understood that kind of heaviness. Psalm 3 wasn't written from a palace but while he was fleeing for his life. His own son had stolen the hearts of the people. Friends had betrayed him. His future was uncertain, and many believed even God had abandoned him.
But David didn't define God by his circumstances. He declared who God had always been.
"You, LORD, are a shield around me..."
God wasn't simply standing between David and danger. He surrounded him on every side. Even when David couldn't see a way forward, he was never beyond God's protection.
"My glory..."
David had lost his throne, his home, and the respect of many who once followed him. But his identity had never rested in a crown. It rested on His King. God Himself was David's honor, his worth, and the One no enemy could ever take away.
This part that captures my heart.
"The One who lifts my head."
When I read those words, I picture my dad when I was little. If I had done something wrong, my head would hang low until he gently lifted my chin. The moment our eyes met, I knew I was forgiven. I was loved no matter what.
That's what God does for us.
The Hebrew verb means "to lift up" or "to raise." Throughout Scripture, a bowed head is the posture of shame, sorrow, and defeat. But God doesn't leave His children staring at the ground. He lifts their eyes until they meet His.
Not because the pain has disappeared.
Not because every problem has been solved.
But because hope is found by looking at Him instead of what weighs us down.
Whatever has bowed your head today hasn't changed who God is.
He is still your Shield.
Still your Glory.
And still the One who lifts your eyes until you can see His grace again.
Because hope doesn't begin when your circumstances change.
It begins when you lock eyes with the One who has never stopped loving you.
You are loved!
