Just to Clarify
Your Father knows exactly what you need even before you ask Him! Matthew 6:8 NLT
I have a confession.
Sometimes I worry God might misunderstand my prayers. I know. It sounds ridiculous even spelling it out on my screen.
Someone will ask me to pray for a friend, a coworker, or a cousin, and somewhere in the middle of my prayer, panic creeps in.
“Lord, please be with Jane…”
And then I realize I don’t know Jane’s last name.
Suddenly, I’m mentally scrambling, wondering if Heaven is somehow sorting through a giant filing cabinet of Janes.
Jane who, Julie?
Can we get a last name up here?
I know that’s nonsense. Of course, God knows exactly which Jane I mean. He knows her needs infinitely better than I do. He knit her together in her mother’s womb. He knows the number of hairs on her head and every burden she carries before I ever whisper her first name only.
But apparently part of me still thinks I need to help Him narrow it down.
And don’t even get me started on travel prayers.
“Lord, keep them safe while they fly. And drive safely to the airport. And through security. And from turbulence. And weird people sitting next to them. And rental cars. And hotels with bed bugs!”
But the one that really exposes me?
“Lord, please get them home safely.”
And then immediately:
HOME-home, Lord.
Like their actual house.
Not Heaven. Not yet!
Because somehow I’m afraid God might misunderstand the assignment.
We laugh because deep down, we know how silly it sounds. But maybe there’s something tender underneath our overexplaining and clarifying. Maybe it’s simply that we care deeply.
Still, Jesus gently reminds us that prayer was never about perfect wording. Your Father already knows. He knows the Jane whose last name you don’t know. He knows the traveler, and the fear tucked inside your prayer for someone to get home safely.
You never have to clarify yourself to the One who already understands your heart.
Because before the words even leave your mouth, He’s already there.
He already knows.
You are loved!
