He Pitched His Tent

The Word became flesh and dwelt among us. John 1:14 CSB

Some of the most overlooked chapters in the Bible are the ones describing the tabernacle. It's easy to skim past the measurements, materials, and detailed instructions without realizing they reveal one of the most beautiful truths in all of Scripture:

God desires to dwell with His people.

After rescuing Israel from slavery in Egypt, God instructed Moses to build a portable sanctuary that would travel with them through the wilderness. The tabernacle would stand right in the middle of their camp, and wherever Israel went, God's presence went with them. He explained its purpose in one simple sentence: "Let them make me a sanctuary, that I may dwell among them" (Exodus 25:8).

The God who created the heavens didn't need a tent. His people needed His presence.

And His desire to dwell with His people didn't end in the wilderness.

Centuries later, John described Jesus with words that would have immediately reminded his readers of the tabernacle: "The Word became flesh and dwelt among us." The Greek word translated dwelt means to pitch a tent or tabernacle among us.

The God whose presence once filled the tabernacle wrapped Himself in flesh and stepped into our world. Jesus walked dusty roads, sat at tables with sinners, touched people others wouldn't go near, and wept with grieving friends. God didn't remain distant from our pain. He entered it.

Then Jesus stretched out His hands on a cross and took upon Himself the sin that separated us from God. Through His death and resurrection, He made the way for sinful people to be reconciled to a holy God.

But God's plan to dwell with His people didn't stop there.

After Jesus returned to Heaven, He sent the Holy Spirit to dwell within every believer. The God who once made His presence known in the tabernacle now makes His home within His people. Paul tells us that we are God's temple and that His Spirit dwells in us (1 Corinthians 3:16).

Think about what that means for you today.

Whatever burden you're carrying, whatever uncertainty lies ahead, whatever fear whispers in your ear, you do not face it without the presence of God.

In the wilderness, God dwelt among His people. In Bethlehem, He took on flesh and entered our world. At the cross, Jesus made the way for us to be reconciled to God. And through the Holy Spirit, God now dwells within every believer.

The tabernacle was never just about a tent. It revealed a truth woven throughout Scripture: God has always chosen to dwell with His people.

And one day, when all things are made new, that promise will be complete: "God's dwelling place is now among the people" (Revelation 21:3).

The God who pitched His tent among us has promised to dwell with you forever.

You are loved!
