Grip or Grace?
For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me and for the gospel will save it. Mark 8:35 NIV
Everything in our world tells us to protect ourselves.
Protect your heart. Protect your reputation. Protect your comfort. Protect your dreams. Build your life. Chase your happiness. Make sure no one gets in the way of your plans.
Sound wise?
Jesus says it's the quickest way to lose your life.
The Greek word translated life here is psyche. It means far more than physical life. It refers to the very core of who we are—our soul, our identity, our self. Jesus isn't merely asking us to risk our lives for Him if persecution comes. He's asking us to surrender the throne of our hearts every single day.
That's where the struggle begins.
We all want Jesus as our Savior. We just don't want to step down from the throne of our own hearts. We cling to the life we're writing, while Jesus invites us into the life He has already written.
We want Him to bless our plans, fix our problems, calm our storms, and open the right doors. But when He asks us to surrender the dream, forgive the person, stay when we'd rather leave, give when we'd rather keep, or trust Him with an uncertain future, we suddenly realize how tightly we're gripping our own lives.
Jesus says if you spend your life trying to preserve control, you'll eventually discover you've lost the very thing you were trying to keep.
But when you finally loosen your grip—when you lay your ambitions, fears, pride, expectations, and future into His hands—you don't lose yourself.
You lose the version of yourself that believed life depended on you.
You discover the peace of trusting the One who has held you all along.
And somewhere in that surrender, you become more like Jesus.
Following Jesus has never been about giving up life. It's about exchanging the small life you've been desperately protecting for the abundant life only He can give.
The world says, "Hold on tighter."
Jesus says, “Trade your grip for My grace.”
Only one of those paths leads to real freedom.
You are loved!
