Fools for the Wrong Things
Stop deceiving yourselves. If you think you are wise by this world’s standards, you need to become a fool to be truly wise. For the wisdom of this world is foolishness to God. 1 Corinthians 3:18-19
In biblical times, calling someone a fool wasn’t just a casual insult. It meant they were reckless, morally blind, or spiritually deaf. The Psalms go so far as to say, “The fool says in his heart, ‘There is no God.’” (Psalm 14:1) In other words, a fool ignored truth, rejected wisdom, and lived as if there were no consequences.
Fast forward to today, and the definition hasn’t changed—but the world’s response has. What God calls foolish, the world often calls freedom. What God defines as sin, culture celebrates as self-expression. And instead of being humbled by truth, many are now offended by it.
Once, public displays of sin were seen as shameful. Now they’re broadcasted, applauded, and even legislated. The boundaries God set for our protection have been redrawn—or erased altogether. Biblical values are mocked. Holiness is “outdated.” And somehow, the ones who choose to follow Christ are now the ones labeled foolish.
But Paul’s words to the Corinthian church remind us: don’t be fooled by the world's applause. If the world thinks you're wise, you might want to double-check whose standards you’re living by.
To follow Jesus in this generation often means being misunderstood. To stand for truth might cost you your reputation. To speak about sin might lose you friends. But wisdom, real wisdom, begins with the fear of the Lord—not with being liked, affirmed, or trending.
If living for Christ makes you a fool in the world’s eyes, you’re in good company. Noah looked foolish building a boat under sunny skies. Moses looked foolish raising a staff to split a sea. And Jesus—hanging on a cross—looked like the biggest fool of all to the watching world. But that “foolish” cross became our only hope.
God’s wisdom has always flipped the script.
So if the world calls you a fool for following Christ, wear it like a badge of honor. Because the same world that mocked Noah drowned in the flood. The same world that ridiculed prophets missed the Word of Life standing in their midst. And the same world that laughed at a crucified Savior will one day bow before Him.
Don’t trade eternal truth for temporary applause. In a world gone mad with self-made wisdom, dare to be a fool for Christ—the kind of fool who clings to the cross, speaks truth in love, and walks in a wisdom this world will never understand.
You are loved!
