Don't Let Me Drift
Take control of what I say, O Lord, and guard my lips. Don't let me drift toward evil or take part in acts of wickedness… Psalm 141:3–4 NLT
Smoke curls through the air wherever the wind carries it.
Fog slowly rolls across the landscape, hiding what was once easy to see.
Dust settles in every neglected corner, accumulating little by little until someone finally notices it.
Leaves float across a pond, surrendering to every ripple and every breeze.
They all have something in common.
None of them choose where they're going. None of them have a destination. They simply yield to whatever current happens to be moving them.
People aren't meant to live that way.
But it's surprisingly easy to drift through life without much intentionality. We stop pursuing God with purpose. We neglect His Word. Our prayer life becomes sporadic. We become comfortable instead of committed. Without realizing it, our priorities begin to shift, our convictions begin to soften, and our hearts slowly move away from the One they were created to pursue.
That's why David prayed, "Don't let me drift toward evil."
He understood that drifting is subtle. No one wakes up one morning and decides to become bitter, prideful, critical, or spiritually indifferent. Those things don't happen overnight. They happen one small compromise, one unchecked thought, one neglected habit at a time.
Long before our mouths become the problem, our hearts have already begun moving in the wrong direction.
Jesus said, "Whatever is in your heart determines what you say" (Matthew 12:34 NLT). Our words don't create what's in our hearts; they simply reveal it. The sarcasm, criticism, gossip, complaining, or anger that spills from our lips has usually been taking root long before anyone else could see it.
David knew the real battle wasn't at his lips. It was in his heart.
That's why he asked God to intervene before the drift became a destination.
Every day, your heart is moving somewhere. It is either growing closer to Christ or being carried by the currents of this world.
There is no spiritual neutral.
No one drifts toward godliness.
So ask God to guard your heart. Stay anchored in His Word. Stay close to His presence. Live with intention.
Drifting doesn't happen because you choose the wrong destination.\
It happens because you stop choosing the right one.
You are loved!
