Borrowed Colors

Search me, O God, and know my heart. Psalm 139:23

Sports fans are serious about their colors.

People paint their faces, wear jerseys, wave giant flags, and proudly display the colors of their favorite team. They want everyone to know where their loyalty lies.

And that's exactly where the expression show your true colors came from.

Centuries ago, ships flew flags called colors to identify which side they belonged to. Some ships sailed under false flags to deceive others, but eventually they had to raise their true colors. In the end, everyone discovered who they really were and where their allegiance belonged.

I wonder how many of us spend our lives sailing under borrowed colors.

The flag of approval. The flag of people-pleasing. The flag of perfection. The flag of always having it together. The flag of fitting in. The flag of looking impressive. The flag of appearing more spiritual than we really are.

The flag of pretending we're fine.

We wave those banners hoping they'll earn acceptance, admiration, or applause.

But God never asked us to impress anyone. He asked us to belong to Him.

Some of us are exhausted because we're trying to maintain an image God doesn’t require.

The pressure to perform never comes from the Father. The need to prove yourself is a terrible master. And comparison will always demand more than it gives.

We spend so much time trying to become the person we think everyone wants.

But God is inviting us to become the person He created us to be.

The Bible is full of examples of imperfect people being authentic before God and others:

David didn't hide his fears. Jeremiah admitted his discouragement. Elijah confessed his exhaustion. Moses had a list of excuses. Paul spoke openly about his weakness.

God wants us real. Authentic. Because He knows humility begins when we stop pretending.

God can't heal and grow the person we're pretending to be. He heals the one who finally comes to Him and says, "Lord, this is me. The anxious me. The insecure me. The struggling me. The impatient me. The me that still needs You every day."

And that's enough.

Authenticity isn't weakness. It's surrender. And surrender is where true transformation begins.

You don't have to fit in. You don't have to impress people. You don't have to become someone else. You don't have to sail under borrowed colors. You already belong to the King.

So lower the flags of approval, performance, and perfection.

Raise the banner of grace. Raise the banner of truth. Raise the banner of who God created you to be.

Because peace begins when you stop performing.

And freedom begins when you finally show your true colors.

You are loved!
