Stay in Your Lane

Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek His will in all you do, and He will show you which path to take. Proverbs 3:5-6 (NLT)

Most of us have experienced that heart-stopping moment on the highway when we hear and feel the tires hit the rumble strip.

Rrrrrrrrtttt!

Nothing wakes you up quite like the sound of your car announcing to everyone around you that you weren't paying attention.

Those grooves along the edge of the road aren't there to ruin your day. They're there to save your life.

They warn you when you're drifting.

Life has spiritual rumble strips too.

God's Word is full of them.

Not because God is trying to keep you from having fun. Not because He's a cosmic killjoy determined to spoil your plans. Quite the opposite.

He loves you too much to let you drift without warning.

Long before we find ourselves far from God, we usually begin by drifting. A little compromise here. A little distraction there. Slowly, almost imperceptibly, our attention shifts from Him to the countless voices competing for our affection.

Our phones tell us we're missing out. Advertisements tell us we need more. Culture tells us to follow our hearts. Social media tells us everyone else is happier.

Meanwhile, the Holy Spirit lovingly reminds us where life is really found.

His boundaries are not prison walls. They're guardrails.

They're rumble strips.

They aren't designed to restrict you from what is good. They protect you from what only looks good and steer you toward what is best—Jesus Himself.

And the beautiful thing is that when you hear the warning, you don't have to panic. You don't have to slam on the brakes or give up in despair.

You simply make the correction.

You turn your attention back to the One who promised to direct your paths.

Because God's warnings are not signs of His anger.

They're reminders of His love.

And that's good news for all of us, because every one of us drifts from time to time.

Thankfully, our Shepherd is really good at bringing wandering sheep safely back into their lane.
