Sprinkle

So he will sprinkle many nations, and kings will shut their mouths because of him. For what they were not told, they will see, and what they have not heard, they will understand. Isaiah 52:15 NIV

When I first read this verse, one word didn’t make sense.

Sprinkle.

Of all the words Isaiah could have chosen, why "sprinkle"?

Why not say Jesus would save the nations? Rescue the nations? Redeem the nations?

Instead, Isaiah says He would sprinkle them.

That wasn't a random choice.

Throughout the Old Testament, priests sprinkled blood on the altar and on the people as a symbol of cleansing from sin. But those sacrifices were never the final answer. They pointed forward to Someone greater.

Seven hundred years before Jesus was born, Isaiah was already hinting that God's Servant would do what generations of sacrifices never could.

He would truly cleanse us.

Isaiah goes on to say, "Kings will shut their mouths because of him."

The Hebrew literally means they will be speechless.

Because no one saw this coming. They expected a conquering king.

God sent a suffering servant.

They expected a throne.

God chose a cross.

They expected victory through power.

God won the greatest victory in the history of forever through sacrificial love.

What looked like defeat became salvation for the world.

Maybe that's why we so often miss what He's doing.

We pray for Him to remove the hardship, but sometimes He uses it to transform us. We ask Him for quick answers, but He patiently reshapes our hearts. We expect Him to work through strength, while He so often works through surrender.

His ways have always been higher than ours.

The cross looked like failure.

Heaven called it victory.

The same God who exceeded every expectation at the cross is still exceeding ours today.

One day, we'll finally see the whole story.

And we will stand speechless.
