Missing What Matters

We speak a message of wisdom… not the wisdom of this age or its rulers, who are coming to nothing. We declare God’s wisdom—a hidden mystery… destined for our glory before time began. None of the rulers understood it… for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. 1 Corinthians 2:6-8

There is a kind of blindness that has nothing to do with eyesight. Paul describes people who were intelligent, influential, and confident in what they believed to be true, yet they completely missed what God was doing right in front of them. They weren’t distant from the things of God—they were immersed in them. They knew the Scriptures. They were watching closely. And still, they didn’t recognize Him.

Not because the truth wasn’t there, but because it didn’t look the way they expected.

They were looking for strength, so they overlooked humility. They were looking for a king, so they dismissed a servant. They were looking for victory, so they rejected a cross. What didn’t fit their expectations, they assumed couldn’t be from God.

Their story isn’t much different from ours.

We may not be standing in a crowd in Jerusalem, but we know what it’s like to decide what God’s work should look like. We pray for healing but expect it to come quickly. We ask for restoration but picture exactly how it should unfold. We want growth without the struggle, peace but without the surrender.

And when it doesn’t come that way, something in us begins to question.

Is God working? Did He hear me? Did I miss something?

What we should be asking is: “Am I missing Him because it doesn’t look the way I expected?”

Sometimes God is working in the very place we’re most tempted to dismiss. He’s shaping something deeper than the outcome we’re focused on. Building trust instead of control, dependence instead of self-sufficiency, faith that isn’t based on visible results.

Sometimes He is doing His most meaningful work in ways that feel the least obvious.

That strained relationship… what if He’s working in your heart first?
That stuck season… what if He’s building endurance for the future?
That unanswered prayer… what if the answer isn’t what you want but exactly what you need?

They missed Jesus because He didn’t match their expectations of how God should move.

We risk missing Him when we do the same.

Where have you already decided what God’s answer should look like? What outcome are you holding so tightly that you might overlook a different kind of work? Are you willing to trust Him—even if His way feels slower, quieter, or harder than you hoped?

God’s wisdom isn’t always obvious, but it is always purposeful.

You don’t miss Him because He’s silent.

Perhaps you miss Him because He refuses to fit inside your expectations.
