Empowered
Afterward, when Jesus was alone in the house with his disciples, they asked him, “Why couldn’t we cast out that evil spirit?” Jesus replied, “This kind can be cast out only by prayer.” Mark 9:29 NLT
The disciples had done this before.
Jesus had already given them authority over unclean spirits, and they had seen miracles with their own eyes. But this time, nothing happened. They tried. They commanded. They struggled.
And they failed.
Later, away from the crowd, they asked the question all of us eventually ask:
"Why couldn't we do it?"
Jesus's answer is surprisingly short.
"This kind can come out only by prayer."
It wasn't a lesson about finding a better technique.
It was a lesson about dependence.
Perhaps the disciples had begun relying more on the authority they had been given than on the One who gave it. They had experience. They had success. But spiritual power has never been stored up from yesterday's victories. It flows from today's relationship with God.
And neither does ours.
We're often tempted to tackle life the same way. We make plans, work harder, research longer, and exhaust ourselves trying to fix what only God can change. Prayer becomes our last resort instead of our first response.
But prayer isn't a backup plan.
Prayer is the declaration that I can't...
but God can.
It isn't informing God about our problems. It's inviting His power into them.
Maybe the battle you're facing isn't a demon-possessed boy. Maybe it's a broken relationship, a prodigal child, an addiction, a frightening diagnosis, crushing anxiety, or a decision that feels impossible to make.
Some battles simply cannot be won through determination, talent, experience, or willpower.
They require dependence.
Not because prayer is magic, but because prayer keeps us connected to the One who has all authority.
The greatest strength you'll ever have isn't self-confidence or self-sufficiency.
It's God-dependence.
You are loved!
