Cracked Cisterns
For my people have done two evil things: They have abandoned me—the fountain of living water. And they have dug for themselves cracked cisterns that can hold no water at all! Jeremiah 2:13
It starts small.
We abandon Him. Little by little, step by step, we walk away. We think we can handle things on our own. We try to control outcomes rather than trusting God. We complain about everything that’s wrong instead of being grateful for what isn’t. We check our investment portfolios consistently but haven’t opened our Bible in months.
We gossip. We lie. We’re distracted. We’re “too busy.”
So we replace Him.
We fill up on every temporary pleasure. Every instant dopamine hit. Our phones. Our comforts. Our habits. The things we reach for without even thinking—the things we hope will take the edge off, quiet the noise, or satisfy something deeper.
But they don’t.
Because they can’t.
God calls them what they are—cracked cisterns. Things we’ve built with our own hands, believing they’ll hold what we need, only to find they leak. What we pour in doesn’t stay. What we depend on doesn’t sustain.
And still… we keep going back.
Not because they work, but because they’re familiar. Because they’re easy. Because surrender feels harder than striving.
Following Jesus isn’t something we drift into. It’s something we choose—again and again. It takes intention to turn back, to open His Word, to quiet the noise, to trust Him when control feels easier.
Because left on autopilot, we don’t move toward the source.
We wander.
But we didn’t just choose something lesser—we walked away from the source.
The fountain.
Living water.
Not something you have to manufacture. Not something you have to maintain. A constant, flowing, never-running-dry source of life, peace, and satisfaction.
And it’s still there.
You don’t have to keep digging. You don’t have to keep striving to fill what won’t hold. You don’t have to keep returning to what leaves you empty.
The source has not dried up.
Come back to the fountain.
You are loved!
