A Prison Called Love
Do not be afraid, for I am with you. Isaiah 41:10 NLT
It might surprise you to learn that the most repeated command in Scripture isn't Try harder. It isn't Get your act together. It isn't Be perfect.
It's "Do not be afraid."
Apparently, God knows a little something about human beings.
Fear and I were already acquainted. I had always leaned toward worry. I liked plans, predictability, and knowing everyone I loved was safe. But years ago, after a young girl we loved died by suicide, something inside me changed. Overnight, the world no longer felt safe, and I became convinced I would lose my own daughter too.
Fear didn't move into my life that day.
It simply grew teeth.
Every morning, before my feet hit the floor, fear would wake up. I expected tragedy, because that one awful possibility had taken up residence in my mind, and I couldn't seem to evict it.
Fear became my prison in an instant.
Fear is human. Grief is real. But what began as heartbreak became hypervigilance. Worry became control. I thought I was building safety. Instead, I was building my own prison.
Control promises peace, but it only delivers exhaustion and even more fear.
Over and over throughout Scripture, God says, “Do not be afraid.” Not because bad things never happen. They do.
Not because loss isn't real. It is.
But because fear was never meant to sit on the throne.
He is.
And maybe that's why God repeats those words so often—not because He expects us never to feel afraid, but because He knows how easily fear becomes our master.
For years, I thought peace would come when I finally gained enough control, when I had thought through every scenario, solved every problem, and protected everyone I loved from heartache.
Instead, I discovered that peace was never found in holding on tighter, but in surrendering what had never been mine to carry.
The opposite of fear isn’t courage.
It’s trust.
So if fear has built a prison around your heart, don’t lose hope. Give your fear to Jesus and let Him carry it for you.
Prison doors will open from the inside.
But one day, yours will swing wide open too.
Because He’s the only One with the key.
You are loved!
